BEHAVIORS & MODERATION PAGE

PRESERVE THE RITUALS.  REMOVE THE NICOTINE

Smoking involves more than nicotine dependence. It also includes familiar rituals and routine behaviors that become deeply ingrained, comforting experiences.  These may include, but are not limited to, hand-to-mouth motion, inhalation and exhalation, sensory stimulation, social engagement, relaxation, tactile experiences, and other behaviors that contribute to the overall smoking experience.

The behaviors of smoking and the pharmacological effects of nicotine are distinct experiences.

Independent of nicotine, familiar rituals and routines provide comfort, enjoyment, and a sense of reward. Nicotine, however, reinforces those behaviors, often increasing how frequently, how intensely, and for how long people smoke. As nicotine reinforcement continues, moderating smoking behaviors becomes increasingly difficult.

FREQUENCY • INTENSITY • DURATION

Nicotine is among the most powerful behavioral reinforcements found in consumer products.  Its rapid delivery and repeated use strengthen smoking behaviors while increasing tolerance and dependence.  Over time, smoking often becomes more deeply integrated into daily routines, making moderation progressively more difficult and cessation increasingly challenging.

Recognizing the distinction between smoking behaviors and nicotine dependence led to the question that inspired COMSIS' research and development efforts:

Can the ritual and routine behaviors that smokers value be separated from nicotine reinforcement?

PRESERVE THE RITUALS. SUPPORT MODERATION.

The answer emerged through the creation of COMSIS' proprietary foundation and introduction of its first commercial application, NAKED Green Tea Cigarettes™. Together, they demonstrated that adult smokers can enjoy familiar smoking ritual and routine behaviors without nicotine reinforcement; thus moderate their smoking experiences.
